An open wilderness with prairie grass and wild flowers growing all over it, this is what the area of Harwood Heights looked like before being found in 1776. The beginnings of Harwood Heights were humble and muddy. The idea was presented to Chicago to annex the area, but was ignored. This is when a veteran took over the responsibility to provide better living conditions and safety to the people that had settled there. The fall of 1947 saw the incorporation of Harwood Heights. This responsibility was taken over by Herbert Hueing and he was selected as the first mayor of Harwood Heights. A vote to incorporate this village was cast and 350 votes were in favor of it. It is suburban area, which is often mistaken to be a part of the city of Chicago.
Harwood Heights has common library, a park district and High school with Norridge, but it is strongly adamant about its separate identity. Despite being a small suburb it has quite a good selection of places to see and experience. It hosts the Galos caves and spa, which is known for its relaxing environment and salt rooms. There are numerous places to eat at, one such place hosts the famous Chicago deep-dish pizza is Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria. The Harwood Height City center is another interesting place to visit. There are many other attractions and play areas for kids both in the vicinity and neighboring suburbs.
